Research and common knowledge both suggest that the most influential relationship in a child’s life is with his or her caregiver. A strong caregiver relationship can limit the effects of trauma, increase a child’s confidence and independence, and empower a child to explore life from a safe base. However, for their caregivers, a history of trauma, loss and transition can add complexity to the already challenging adolescent years. How do we empower caregivers to parent their adolescent children well? This presentation will center around an effective adolescent parenting program based in a developing nation, and will communicate practical tools for improving parenting skills.
